Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
